How to get to Margaret River

Margaret River is not just a stunning picturesque town, it is a world renown region that is rich in nature, wildlife, history and beauty. There are many activities available throughout the region including Whale Watching Experiences, Caves, Surfing and more so it really is no surprise that many flock to the region to enjoy all that this beautiful location has to offer.

Margaret River is in the South West of Western Australia, it is approx. a 3 hour drive south of Perth (269kms). It is easily accessible via car or bus. Soon you will be able to fly into the Busselton airport from Melbourne with Jetstar which is fantastic as Busselton is the gateway into the Margaret River Region.

Some Fun Facts about Margaret River

  • So many people visit Margaret River but don’t essentially “see or experience the river”. Hire a canoe/kayak or join a local tour operator and really “experience” the river, you won’t regret it!
  • Take a drive down Kevill Road in Margaret River and search for the stunning Yalgardup Falls. A breath-taking find that mainly only the locals know about, a perfect spot to read a book or to sit and enjoy the peace and quiet whilst nestled in nature’s beauty.
  • Margaret River is not only home to award winning wineries it also hosts some of the best Gin distilleries and Breweries, the Beer Farm and Wild Hop brewing being a few of the good ones, all family friendly also!
  • Margaret River Whale Watching Experiences are available from May – November. You can depart from Augusta in the Winter or Dunsborough & Busselton in the Spring.  All locations are a part of the Margaret River Region and are all approx. a 35-minute drive from Margaret River.

 

Margaret River Whale Watching Experience

Margaret River is a unique destination, you can’t see whales from Margaret River itself, but you can experience Whale Watching from many seaside towns all in close proximity to Margaret River. 

Northern Migration – Augusta Whale Watching Experience

From the cooler months of late Autumn – Winter (May – August) make the 35-minute journey to Augusta, here you can experience sighting Humpback Whales & Southern Right Whales as they rest and frolic in Flinders Bay. Take in the sights of the Leeuwin Lighthouse whilst you are on your tour and witness where the Southern & Indian ocean meet. 

Southern Migration – Dunsborough & Busselton Whale Watching Experience

As we start to near the warmer months of Spring this is a wonderful time to take the opportunity to enjoy a Whale Watching Experience from either Busselton or Dunsborough. Both of these locations are around a 35 – 40 minute drive from Margaret River and are both epic locations to experience Whale Watching. Tours depart from Busselton & Dunsborough from late August through to November. 

When departing from Dunsborough and Busselton we are enjoying the blissful calm waters of Geographe Bay. Here we not only the Humpback and the Southern Right Whale but you are also provided with the opportunity to see the worlds largest living animal – The Blue Whale! 

With Augusta, Busselton & Dunsborough all in close proximity you are guaranteed no matter where you are in the Margaret River region to have an opportunity to enjoy a Margaret River Whale Watching Experience. 

 

What is included on a Whale Watching Experience

All Whale Watching tours that are departing from the Margaret River Region depart daily at 10am & 2pm (1.30pm for Busselton) when in season. They are approximately 2.5 hours long. A light morning/afternoon tea is included and generally we have a special offer to enjoy a discounted meal at one of our partner restaurants. Sit back and enjoy live commentary from one of our experienced ocean safari guides, as you embark on a journey to learn some fun facts about the Whales!

 

Will I Experience Sea Sickness on my Margaret River Whale Watching Experience?

Sea sickness can occur; however you can take precautions. Visit your local chemist and have a chat with the pharmacist, they will be able to recommend sea sickness tablets that are right for you. Also when you are on board for your Whale Watching Experience be sure to listen to the tips and tricks that the crew provide to help you prevent feeling queasy! 

 

Where to Eat & Drink in Margaret River

You will be sure to be feeling a bit peckish after your Whale Watching Experience and are probably wondering where to go for a bite to eat, see below for a few of our suggestions:

  • Settlers Tavern – Located on the main street of Margaret River this is a true “locals” icon. It was originally opened in 70’s and is well known to be a fun location to Eat, Drink & Groove! Serving up quality pub food, local brews and good vibes!
  • Morries – For a more sophisticated dining experience, Morries is a good place to check out. Morries is another venue on the main street, serving up delicious cocktails and tapas. Your mouth will be left feeling like you are on a flavoursome rollercoaster, a great place to reminisce on the amazing Whale Watching Experience you just enjoyed!
  • Cowaramup Brewing Company – Take a small drive out of Margaret River on to Treeton Road and you will find this family friendly gem the Cowaramup Brewing Company! Home to a fantastic playground for the children and yummy food, sure to be a win for the whole family!
