NAUGHTY NEONATE

Naughty Neonate in Bremer Canyon Orca Whale Watching

For today’s Killer Whale Watching in Bremer Canyon update. Orca scouring the depths for food meant we picked back up where we left off yesterday! With multiple pods in the hotspot we watched on as they took dive after dive – potentially listening out for the wary Beaked Whales.

Soon the calf Neo came charging towards us, the rest of the family in tow. He delighted passengers for the next few hours by showing us his best back flop, side flop, front flop, twisting, spy hopping, tail slap and the “wiggle”.  Nani and Neo’s mother were always alongside the teeny tiny calf not letting him get too confident and venture. He did manage to surge away on occasion but his mum was hot on his heels and chauffeured him back towards the pod.

After spending the morning with Orca we sought out our second cetacean species for the day, PILOT WHALES! A pod of approximately forty relaxed pilots showed curiosity in our vessel with some looking at us from above the surface with a spy hop and others enjoying the 2 metre swell by surfing down towards and across the bow of our vessel.

Urkel and Noosa greeted us once back in the hotspot, with a “celebrity” close pass by Split Tip who blew into the faces of those standing at the stern!

The cherry on top was being MUGGED (the good kind) by two juveniles who whooshed under our vessel and turned side on to get a good glimpse at our passengers. Raises the question: who was watching who?

An Australian Sea Lion pup was very vocal when we visitied Glasse Island on the way home, calling out to his mum who was sitting very close to an extremely large and rather threatening Sea Lion Bull. The bull shifted and his attention was caught by a heavily pregnant Sea Lion Cow (female). As soon as he waddled up to her the little pup bolted down to his mum and cuddled up to her enjoying a suckle of milk.
