KILLING AND CHILLING

Orca Whales Killing and Chilling in Bremer Canyon

The Bremer Canyon Killer Whale Watching never disappoints.

After an hour long search of Orca in the hotspot they finally showed up and they sure made the wait worthwhile. With hundreds of birds swirling above waiting for a small scrap of food to become available from the slick below. The black silhouette of a humungous male Orca dorsal slowly emerged amongst the chaos! We recognise this Orca from last season and today he scored the nicknamed GOKU!  The pod appeared to be hunting and body slamming something at the surface and from the photos we have small glimpses SQUID!

Social Orca for the rest of the day has left us speechless! Split tip’s pod joined in on the action so we now had over 20 Orca in the vicinity. At least 3 large males and 4 or so playful calves cruised away from the main group which consisted of adult females. The playful calves would surf the wave down towards our bow and shoot through under our feet! Sometimes they would come in HOT but put the brakes on last minute and do a handstand at the side of our vessel! We had orca consistently close that we started a new trend of taking orca selfies too!

They rolled and tumbled, pushed each other out of the water, tail slapped, performed head stands, blew bubble rings and raspberries at us and consistently mugged our vessel.

We are so fortunate to be able to go out in the Southern Ocean and witness such behaviour! Although the swell was up the wind had dropped which meant for an amusing expedition! We had to endure three or four small squalls that moved through but when you have orca within arms reach you seem to forget about the rain!
