Hotspot is HOT!

Orca Meat

We don’t call it the hotspot for nothing!

Today for our Bremer Canyon Killer Whale watching we did not leave it, just meandered around following the Orcas as they attended to beaked whale business i.e. LUNCH! As we dropped over the 1000m contour line this morning the distinct oil smell lingered in the water. It only meant one thing…. FRESH KILL for the orcas.

They buzzed around in circles and dived continuously with new oil slicks constantly appearing on the surface. We suspected they had already made the kill and were most likely devouring it and sharing it amongst pod members as we eagerly watched on. It wasn’t long before an adult female killer whale brought a large chunk of bright red fleshy meat to show off. Another whale was spotted holding onto what looked to be the main frame of the animal with a bone sticking out!!

This feeding lasted multiple hours and it allowed our passengers to really engage and grasp what they were witnessing. After feeding is social time and we were greeted on multiple occasions by the big bulls El Notcho and Nibbles. El Notcho did not disappoint us with his slow dorsal rise and fall in the water which he is becoming ever increasingly known for.

For our followers who love birds, today the typical fleshy footed shearwaters and Indian Yellow Nose Albatross were joined by a Great Shearwater and a Northern Giant Petrel!
