Orcas Away, Prey Rest Day

After all the action yesterday, this ocean of many great mysteries gave us another surprise today. Unfortunately, the mystery was – where did they all go!?!?!

Yep, it was a no orca day, even with our persistent and optimistic searching east and west along the expanse of the 1000m bathymetry line, not an orca pod to be seen. Seems the beaked whales got a rest today after yesterday’s action! Though we did have some special sights along the way. A few glimpses at a juvenile blue whale in 70m of water along the shelf which we always love to see. Just knowing we are in the same vicinity as the largest animal that has ever lived on the planet is enough to give you a buzz. The fierce toothed giants of the deep, bull sperm whales were also travelling across deeper sections of the canyons. We spent time and were awed by their size, and the way they arched their backs then slid down into the depths below with a final picture-perfect tail display. So even though the orcas left us high and dry today, it really was a great day out at sea with lovely company and smiles all round. We’ll be back tomorrow as excited as ever to see our friends the orcas. Thanks to all!
